I woke Don at the wee hour of 5 a.m. and we were out of the house by 5:30 and headed to Hunting Island, South Carolina. There is a historic lighthouse there and it is celebrating 150 years this year! I love to photograph wildlife and scenery. Lately I have a thing for lighthouse and it gave me an excuse to go for a nice long ride. Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day, not so hot temperatures and a clear blue sky. Just as the sun was coming up we were just south of the Broad River bridge when I noticed a group of Wood storks, I made one of my signature U-turns and went back to photograph them.

Then we continued onto Hunting Island State park. There is a $4.00 fee per person to enter the park. But in my opinion it is worth every penny. All the roads going through the park are one way and are canopied with oaks, palms and pines. It is picturesque as the roads wind throughout the park. We went straight to the lighthouse. As I said this lighthouse is celebrating a 150 years in October. It stands 132ft high and has 167 steps going up. Trust on this I know. There is a $2.00 fee for climbing the lighthouse. (Now I have to pay for exercise), (just kidding), it was well worth it. Don's idea of climbing the lighthouse, I think it was his way of getting even for waking him up at 5:00 am. Anyway the view is amazing from the top and the cool breezes were will worth it. Here is a shot of the lighthouse and Don at the top of it. There is a lot of history here and I'm not going to give a history lesson, because I will probably misquote something and I don't want to do that.

After climbing back down the lighthouse we headed out to beach, which is less than 400 ft from the lighthouse. The lighthouse has been moved in the past and I think this will be in its future eventually also. South Carolina has the same beach erosion problems as my beloved Jekyll Island, but I think South Carolina is eroding faster, they have much more wave action than we do. Here is a shot of the waves coming up onto beach near the trees and driftwood. The other is a black&white I took of the nesting dunes for the sea turtles. Loggerhead sea turtles also nest here.

After leaving the lighthouse portion of the park we discovered they also have a lagoon which is perfect for kayaking and fishing. You can also rent cabins at the park. There is also a wildlife viewing area where we spotted an osprey and a marsh board walk which I think you could see alot of wildlife is you hit the tide just right. I was there during high tide and didn't see too much. But, there was a greeter at the parking lot. This adorable young buck still in velvet was standing right at the entrance way. I just had to stop and take a picture. Unfortunately the moron behind me wasn't as enthused with the wildlife and kept blowing his horn. It didn't really bother me or the young buck, we both ignored him until we were through. Here is his picture.

Isn't he cute. Just down from the park there is a nature center fishing pier. There is also a usage fee for this but I am not sure how much. But it definitely seems to be a hot spot there were lots of people there.

After that I drug my hubby to Hilton Head Island, as I said I have a thing for lighthouses and I want to photograph the one at Harbour Town. After paying another $5.00 entrance fee onto Sea Pines and parking a good distance away I finally saw the lighthouse. Unfortunately I was disappointed. Just wasn't what I expected. Here is the photo I took.

And enough said on that topic. We then stopped by to say Hello to my brother in law, Russell, whom lives real close to the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, another of my favorite places. So after our visit Don said we could take a quick ride through the Refuge. It was getting late and I think everyone retired early...I saw a few Anhingas, Moorhens, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, only three gators, and this Great Egret. But it was still worth the trip.

This was a very enjoyable day! All said and done we racked up another 300 plus miles on my tired old Chevrolet Pickup and we were quite worn out ourselves by the time we got home. Hunting Island has become another one of my favorite places and is a wonderful example of The Beauty that Surrounds Us.

Florida A1A

This week has been a week of ups and downs. Beginning of the week hubby had to have surgery on his jaw and by the end of the week I was making a midnight run to the ER for a gall bladder attack. Well I am happy to report that by Saturday we were both doing much better.

On Saturday morning we decided to take a ride to Florida. I wanted to photograph the Amelia Island Lighthouse and take a leisurely drive down highway A1A. First stop was Fort Clinch State Park a $6.00 fee is required at the gate. They have a nice overlook where the lighthouse can be viewed across Egan's Creek. The park of course has the Fort which I have visited previously but not this time. I continued on down toward the beach and the incredibly long fishing pier. At this entrance you can access the beach or the pier. Please be careful on the beach not to disturb the sea turtle nests, I saw at least five nests that were marked. This area is also home to alot of different birds, be sure not to disturb the nesting and/or resting shore birds. Here are a few pictures of the pier and the lighthouse.

As we were leaving the pier I noticed this mockingbird preening himself. He was so engrossed at the task in hand he could have cared less about me.

After leaving Fort Clinch I was determined to find the Lighthouse and get a better photo. Let me tell you that was a chore. When we finally did locate the lighthouse it was posted Private Property. The Lighthouse is owned by the Coast Guard and is only open for tours the first Monday and Wednesday of the month. Lucky for the grounds keeping crew was there and they were nice enough to let me in and photograph this adorable 67ft tall Lighthouse. Thank You Gentlemen, I really do appreciate it. Here is one of the photos I took.

We then got back onto A1A and headed South to Big Talbot Island. The parking fee here is $3.00. The park offers a higher bluff over the water and a short walk through the woods for beach access. The beach is picturesquely littered with fallen trees and driftwood much like my beloved Jekyll Island. Saturday was the perfect picture taking day! The sky was a brillant blue with big white puffy clouds. Here are just a few photos.

We walked down the trail and encountered a lot of these spiders, Golden Orb Weavers. and anyone who knows me knows how I feel about spiders....Not exactly my favorite creature on earth, but as long as they leave me alone...I'll leave them alone. Anyway just before accessing the beach there is another scenic overlook, it sure was a beautiful day!

After leaving Big Talbot Island and heading south again on A1A we crossed over a small area of marsh called Simpson Creek and I noticed a few Roseate Spoonbills, Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets, sorry I didn't get a photo of the Snowy Egret, they were a little camera shy.

Then we continued on down to Little Talbot Island, there is a $5.00 entrance fee. This park offers 5 miles of beach and picnic areas. I did not go on the beach or take any photos on this day. The place was so crowded. Maybe next time. Further South just a few mile is Huguenot State Park which has an entrance fee of $3.00 and you can drive on the beach. We did not stop here either because my poor, little, tired, truck would probably get stuck in the sand and it also was very crowded maybe another day.

At this point we turned around and headed back North on A1A, when I noticed a sign for B.E.A.K.S. Wildlife Sanctuary so we turned down the dirt road and enjoy the coolness under the shady trees and took a slow ride. The actual B.E.A.K.S. (Bird Emergency and Kare Sanctuary) Facility was closed but we enjoyed the ride through the woods and encountered this Gopher Tortoise.

After that we grabbed a bite to eat and headed home. I enjoyed our short jaunt down A1A and Florida is certainly another example of the Beauty that Surrounds Us and has a lot to offer for outdoor and nature enthusiasts. But it can tally up...I think I'm going to invest in the yearly park pass.

Toombs and Appling County

Wow! I know it has been forever and a day since I posted. I will try to do better. Life gets a little crazy sometimes. This past weekend Hubby and I hopped in my truck and rode up to Toombs county. Why Toombs county you may ask...well first of all it is my husbands birth place and second of all why not. Well actually the Altamaha River runs through both counties and is full of beautiful farm country and I was looking for a place to take some photos. I was beginning to think I had forgotten how to use my camera. We headed to Grays Landing which is right next to Benton Lee's Steakhouse. The food smelled delicious. I was really surprised at how low the water was, needless to say there weren't too many boats being launched, here are a few pics.

Then I found a boat ramp off US 1 under the Lanes Bridge I believe it is called bordering Appling and Toombs County also crossing the Altamaha River, but here I found a few other surprises. Lots of Butterflies many Viceroys, Question Marks, Common Buckeyes ans Sulphurs. Here are few more pics.

While walking the road I also happened across this guy and he was nice enough to pose for me. Sunday was a chance for local artists to set up their displays along the Riverwalk between 2pm to about 6pm. There was recorded Jazz music playing all day. But at 5pm at the Gazebo the live music started. There was quite a crowd who showed up just to listen to the music and enjoy a very relaxing evening.

The Woodbine Woman's Club has had the City of Woodbine classed as a bird sanctuary. They are also working to get Woodbine a designation on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail. They had many birdhouses put up along the Riverwalk as well as feeding stations with the help of Lydia and Wild Birds Store on Jekyll Island.

All in all I had a very nice day. It was a great chance to meet and talk to people and network with fellow artists. The ladies of Woodbine did a wonderful job of coordinating this event and were more than helpful and polite. I like to give a special Thank You to Lori for feeding my husband and checking on us.

Woodbine is located on Highway 17 in Georgia, exit 14 off Interstate 95. It is also the Home of the Annual Crawfish Festival which is held the last weekend April. The Crawfish Festival is always an opportunity to enjoy entertainment, great food and plenty of Arts and Crafts Booths. Woodbine Georgia is an example of some of the small town Beauty that Surrounds Us.

Time to take to the Water

Well, the weatherman sure was wrong today!! But, it was cancelled at the last minute. I'm looking forward to it being rescheduled. Anyway, if you are not aware of what Bird Island is....It is basically a large sandbar/small island that was made a few years ago in St. Simon's Sound. It is mostly to benefit nesting and resting birds such as Brown Pelicans, Oystercatchers, Black Skimmers and shore birds mostly. So we decided to check it out from a distance. The important thing top remember here is to NOT disturb the birds. People are not allowed on this ground and there are several signs posted around it. But, it sure is a treat to check out with your binoculars or a zoom lens. Today there were many Brown Pelicans, White Pelicans and Cormorandts. Check them out!!

And of course since we were in the area we had to cruise along the Coast of my favorite Island, Jekyll Island. I must admit the winter weather gets me a bit down. I can't handle the cold as well as I use to and I truly love seeing the sun shine down on us. There is nothing more depressing than a cold gray gunmetal sky. AND that certainly was not the case today!!! It was a glorious morning, sun shining weather warming and birds singing and flowers blooming.

This morning I headed out to Jekyll Island and decided to go to the old Amphitheater. If you have never been it is truly worth the trip. The Amphitheater is located across from the historic district and down from the firehouse. There are two dirt roads leading to a parking lot which is canopied by huge old oak trees, then a little archway leads you to the Amphitheater and the pond. Be sure to bring your binoculars!!

There are several paths winding through the woods that are filled with huge oaks, pines and lots of palmetto. Where there is a gentle breeze it will softly rain down oak leaves all around you. If you take the first path to your right and follow it around it will lead you to the back of the actual Amphitheater. The Amphitheater is no longer used all the remains are signs of time gone by. One sight that you are likely to see if you climb the step to the audience seating or sneak in back stage is a large array of Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures often seated on the benches or readied on the light poles as if waiting for the show to begin. Some people refer to them as the critics.

If you continue around on the path you will come to the Pond. The pond is an almost magical place. This is where many Great Egrets, Woodstorks, Anghingas and Night Herons come to nest and or roost. Here are some shots I took of a Juvenile and an Adult Yellow Crowned Night Heron along with a shot of the Woodstorks.

It is real important to try and not disturb these birds as many are nesting and tending to their young or simply trying to find a quiet place to rest. The area is abundant with squirrels, songbirds, some gnats, an occasional gator in the pond and if you're real quiet and time it just right you might even see my timid little three legged friend, whom I call Dolly.

The Jekyll Island Amphitheater and Pond are just one more example of some local places to find all The Beauty that Surrounds Us. Please remember to take everything you brought with you and keep it a beautiful place for those who visit after us. Until next time Take the time to slow down and look around. I hope everyone had a safe and Happy New Year. I decided to start my New Year doing one of things I love to do most. I grabbed up my camera and the keys to my trusty old truck and headed out to seek some local wildlife.

I started at the quiet little pond on Lanier Road in Brunswick. I haven't been there in quite a while and I was given a pleasant treat. As I pulled up a saw a Snowy Egret, a Great Egret, a group of Hooded Mergansers, a Little Blue Heron, a Great Blue Heron and that frisky little Kingfisher I have been trying to photograph for months. Well, the little Kingfisher must have been in a good mood, 'cause I finally captured a good shot. They are so quick and so shy. Here are the Hooded Mergansers, male and female, and the Kingfisher.

I was certainly off to a good start. I headed back toward Jekyll Island, I hadn't been there for a while, when I spotted this young Osprey having breakfast atop the telephone pole. He didn't mind giving me a photo op.

After saying goodbye to the Osprey I headed over to Ski Rixen Pond which is where Tidelands Nature Center is located and the Jekyll Island Boat Ramp. While slowly cruising thru the area I spotted a couple Snowy Egrets, a Great Egret and one of my favorite wading birds, The Little Blue Heron which I also managed to get several good photos. Check them out.

This was certainly my idea of starting the New Year off right. Then low and behold my electronic leash, (cell phone), started to ring. It was time to call it a morning, but I was anxious to check out the pictures I had taken anyway.

Once I got home hubby said we were going to go for a ride, maybe see what else I could find to photograph. Well we headed toward Camden County and started to hit some dirt roads. We came across some more Hooded Mergansers and a few wading birds but it was looking kind of slow until we hit Lampadoshia Road. As I was driving and chatting away, my eagle eye husband spotted a hawk sitting beside the road. I stopped the truck and turned off the engine. I was really expecting him to fly away. But, it didn't, I slowly got out of the truck with my camera in hand and started taking pictures. I probably wasn't more than 12 feet away. I couldn't believe my luck. After firing off several shots I decided to move closer slowly all the while snapping pictures. I could not believe my eyes, I was not no more than six feet away from this stunning creature. A Red Tailed Hawk. I have tried for months and months to photograph the Red Tailed Hawk on the Jekyll Island Causeway, but that Hawk is very smart, as soon as I take my foot of the gas pedal he flies away. Actually I think he just likes toying with me playing cat and mouse. But, now I was directly in front of this stunning raptor. The closer I got the more concerned I got, thinking this amazing bird must be injured, I asked my husband to call DNR. In the meantime a car pulled up with a guy named Joey and his friend, they were amazed to see this bird and me standing within only 3 feet of it. I was actually sitting on the ground beside the bird, it was awesome!!! While on the phone with DNR the Hawk starting moving around a bit and actually flew to another low hanging branch. I couldn't see any obvious injuries and the DNR Officer said as long as he was moving and using his wings that he would most liking be fine. He suspected that the Raptor has taken a glancing blow from a passing car and was a bit dazed. This Red Tailed Hawk will never realize the joy I got from photographing it and how incredible it was to be this close to one of God's amazing creatures. Here are several shot I took of the Red Tailed Hawk.

This Red Tailed Hawk was very lucky to not have been seriously injured. It has been a busy time of year. I would like to take a moment and wish everyone a very safe and Merry Christmas. I am pleased to report that in spite of the economy and our illustrious government I found the Christmas Spirit to be very plentiful this year. At work we were involved in the Angel Tree/Santa Tree program. People sponsored a child or family and helped make their Christmas much Merrier. In all we were able to help about 100 families in the Camden County area. I must say some of my co-workers went all out. It was great seeing people giving and being so generous and having so much fun doing it!!

Then my favorite local radio station The Wave 104.1, put on their own radio-thon to raise money for coastal Georgia families. The always entertaining Joe Willie Sousa and Mike Cornell stayed in the studio and on the radio all day last Friday. They raised in excess of $2600.00! WAY TO GO GUYS!!! Everyone is feeling the belt tighten a bit this year and I think it was amazing that our little coastal community pulled together to raise this money to help those less fortunate. This is the true meaning Christmas! This is the true Beauty that Surrounds Us.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry and Blessed Christmas! Please be safe during your holiday travels and look forward to hearing from you again next year!!

Remember:

Live Simply............
Love Generously....
Care Deeply.............
Speak Kindly...........
Give Freely...............

Jekyll Island Tree Lighting

Saturday evening was the official lighting of the Holiday Tree on Jekyll Island. We were setting up to help children and their parents make pine cone bird feeders. Lydia Thompson had done this last year so she was our leader. We also had help from some lovely interns Mika, Rainey and Kathy along with Ms. Chunn. Boy was I glad they were there. This means I didn't have to get covered in peanut butter. haha. I and my husband, Don, tried to help out by being the gophers. Lydia, Ms. Chunn, Rainey, Mika and Kathy helped the children pick out a pine cone, tie a string around it, slather it in peanut butter and then roll it in bird seeds, carefully place them in bags and help clean their little hands. Marge Innes was there helping the kids color pictures of painted buntings and talking to them about birds and selling souvenirs to support Nature Day. Trish MacMilllian was busy modeling our fancy bird feeders and lining the little ones up. Me...I took the role of photographer/gopher and it suited me just fine.

Here are some pictures of the kids making the bird feeders. I think they made some where in the ball park of 180 bird feeders. Let me tell you....that's alot of peanut butter and pine cones.

I was amazed at how many people came out. I personally appreciate all the hard work everyone did, and a special thanks to Miss Janie Smith at Wild Birds Unlimited on Jekyll Island for all the needed supplies, including the little red wagon.

If you have time you should stop in Wild Birds Unlimited they have a huge selection of bird feeders, yard ornaments, books, and so much more. Definitely go to Jekyll Island and check out all the lights and decorations. I personally have been enjoying a nice extended weekend. Spending lots of time with my Hubby. Once again I rousted my husband out of bed at 5:00 am and on Friday we took a trip to Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge, which is located right off Interstate 95 at exit 67 in McIntosh County. On the corner of Harris Neck Road sits the Smallest Church in America. Which is so sweet and quaint. The doors are open all the time for everyone to enjoy and worship.

Well, when we arrived at the Refuge the gates weren't open yet. The Refuge doesn't open until 6:30 am. So we took a ride down to the Barbour River Boat Ramps and watched the sunrise. This is my favorite time of morning. I love watching the world wake up and start a new day. Here are some of the pictures I took.

After the sunrise we headed back to the Refuge and encountered a young doe frantically trying to cross the road. We stopped and let her safely pass. When we reached the entrance the gates were open. There is no charge for entering Harris Neck. It offers a boat ramp and fishing pier at the immediate entrance. It also offer many hiking trails and a wildlife drive. My first stop was Woody Pond. In the spring and summer Woody Pond is loaded with nesting wading birds. This time of year is mostly ducks, coots, moorhens and cormorants along with some wading birds. Here are some shots of the Common Moorhens, American Coots ans Blue Winged Teals I saw along with some scenic shots..

We then continued on to Goose Pond. Goose Pond requires a bit of walking but, it was a nice cool morning and bugs weren't bad. When we arrived a t the Pond I immediately noticed the Woodstorks feeding, the Green Winged Teals and a few Hooded Mergansers. But, it was my husband, Don who noticed the white bird all by itself. It was a Snow Goose, I have never seen a Snow Goose so this was quite a treat. Here are the pics from Goose Pond.

We stopped by the Office to confirm that it was a Snow Goose we had seen and Ms. Pat Metz agreed and said it had been here for about two weeks now. We had a very enjoyable day. These are just a few of the things Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge has to offer. But there are many more Ponds and Trails. There is definitely alot of beauty to be seen here and in the County of McIntosh. 'Til next time be safe and take the time to slow down and look around.

Savannah Wildlife Refuge

So sorry it has taken me sooo long to post this. What a great weekend!! On Saturday evening I asked my hubby to join me for my Sunday Road Trip. He grumbled a bit when I told him if would have to get up at 5 am. But, he agreed. We ventured a bit further north than we usually do. We went to the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, which is just across the South Carolina border. This is a well managed and beautifully maintained Refuge. It has a four mile driving nature trail winding through the refuge. The dikes between the lochs are very well maintained and makes for easy walking or biking. My favorite part of the driving trail is the first mile. This area is chock full of water birds, wading birds and raptors. The day was picturesque. Cool, clear, crisp, a bit windy, but, blue skies were endless.

Our first encounter was a Great Blue Heron fishing in the reeds. As we rounded the next bend we saw this tree just chock full of Cormorandts and Anhingas.

The next picture is actually on of my favorite wading birds, the Little Blue Heron and right beside him was this feeding Tri-Colored Heron.

As we were looking across the marsh watching as Osprey fishing, that's when we noticed all the American Coots and Common Moorhens, they were out in droves.
We also saw a Harrier Hawk flying low over the Marsh and a Red Tailed Hawk, all within the first mile of the Refuge. As we continued through the Refuge at times you feel like you are in tunnels, the way the trees arch over the roads and meet together the light poking through every now and then. It is so peaceful.

At about the three mile marker we spotted this little Doe feeding quietly in the grass and just down from her we saw another pair of Red Tailed Hawk and a Vulture soaring over the fields. The only regular residents of the Refuge we didn't see were the Alligators, it must have been a bit chilly for them. I have seen some really BIG Gators out here. Here is picture of one I saw back in the summer.

Although this is a little further than my typical morning rides, it is definitely worth the drive. This is a place where beauty abounds.

Finally, Back to Jekyll Island

Sorry it has taken me so long to write. Life has given me a surprise dose of reality. But, I'm not going to dwell on it!! Besides that I have been real busy with Festivals and Shows. I have been to some nice places such as Reidsville, Jesup, Soperton and Darien. The Darien Fall Festival was this past Saturday. I had a really good time. But, one of the best things about it is that now it is over and I don't have anymore shows until December 6th and 7th on St. Simons Island.

So....that means that first thing Sunday I was up and out of the house with my camera in hand!! Woohoo!! It has been at least a month since I have been able to just ride around and take some pictures. I headed for the little pond in Brunswick but nobody was home. On my to Jekyll Island I spotted this beautiful Great Egret standing in a pine tree. She is a picture of elegance

Then I continued my way to Jekyll Island. It was a glorious morning, cool and crisp with lots of sunshine and clear blue skies. Just before crossing the bridge onto the island to the toll booth. I spotted another familiar sight, unfortunately I couldn't get a real clear picture but you get the idea. The Bald Eagle is the most majestic bird. This adult is stunning. There is also a juvenile that hangs out on the causeway, his head isn't quite all white yet and his body still has some white speckled in with the brown. I also saw two Red Tailed Hawks and an Osprey. Keep your eyes open around there. They love to perch on the telephone poles.

I headed for the South End of the Island and started walking thru the dunes when I came upon my first visitor. A cute and brazen little marsh rabbit. He actually made me feel like I was interrupting his breakfast. He was kind enough to allow me to pass by hopping off the walkway for just a minute so I could continue on my way.

I wish I could have gotten a picture of my next encounter but it happened too quick and he wasn't sticking around for a photo op. As I walked down the little path enjoy the morning sun, I startled an impressive six point Buck. I usually see a Doe out this way but, never the Buck. We both froze for about a minute, and as I reached for my camera behind my back and ever so gingerly removed the lens cap and stuck it in my back pocket. He just stared not moving a muscle. But......, when I turned it on he heard the flash pop up. He raised his head, I think he snickered at me and calmly walked back into the brush. Just before I lost sight of him he flipped me the tail!! It was nice experience. Here is a picture I took of the Doe earlier this year.

I continued on to the Southern Point of Jekyll Island which is land marked by a sunken shrimp boat mast. For me this end of the Island is like a treasure chest. You never know what you find here. There are a great number of shore birds that come here to rest such as : Brown Pelicans, Black Skimmers, American Avocets, Oystercatchers, Ruddy Turnstones, Piping Plovers, Sanderlings, many types of Terns and Gulls just to name a few. I, as usual, was not disappointed. Here are a few shots I took while I was there.

As I was leaving the South End I couldn't help but notice all the colorful winged beauty flying around me. There were thousands of Gulf Fritilaries and Monarch Butterflies every where. Here is a shot of a popular hangout for the Fritilaries.

Well this concludes my brief Sunday stroll. I cautiously invite all of you to visit the South End of the Island. But please keep this in mind, these birds are here to rest. This is a pristine place. This is not the place to bring your dogs to run. Dogs like to chase birds and this stresses the resting birds. Also remember that whatever you bring with you, you take with you. There are no trash cans on this stretch of beach. Do not disturb the dunes, birds and turtles nest here. This is thier home. We are lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit on occasion. I definitely class this as a place where the Beauty Surrounds Us. Have a Great Day!!

Jekyll Island Bird Banding Station

During the Colonial Coast Birding and Nature Festival last week, which by the way I feel was a great success. I had the opportunity to visit the Jekyll Island Bird Banding Station. The Station is located at the South end of the island amidst the dunes. The Station has been in operation for thirty years and is run by Chris, Jan, and Charles. All the work they do is volunteer. They place rows a large nets up in the dunes and as the birds get caught in the nets they collect them and determine sex, birth year, body fat, body length, wing length and weight. Then they fit them with the appropriate band with an identification number on it. Then the bird is released. All this is done while putting minimum stress on the birds. These people truly have a love for what they do.
While I was there we saw some really nice birds. I got to release a female Painted Bunting and I heard the heat beat of a Western Palm Warbler. It was amazing.
Below are some pictures of the birds we saw.

Above from left to right: Female Painted Bunting, White Eyed Vireo and Yellow Breasted Chat. We also saw a Male Cardinal, American Redstart, Gray Catbird and a Northern Water Thrush. I found this experience amazing. The information they gather helps identify migration patterns, breeding populations, health of the birds, and rise and or decline in species.

Colonial Coast Birding and Nature Festival

Well it is finally here!! I don't think the weather could be any more perfect. On Sunday my hubby and I went for a ride just to pass some time and maybe get a few pictures. I asked him if we could go by Burnt Fort Chapel. So we took the scenic route.

I love to travel dirt roads. While riding down Bailey's Mill Road, I saw an adult raccoon cross the road. So I slowed way down to see if any babies were following. I stopped and looked up in the trees and there I found two young raccoons. I got out of the truck and snapped a few pictures. This was a treat. I love raccoons. We raised three of them when I was child.

Then we continued on our way and headed to the Chapel. I have photographed the Burnt Fort Chapel before, but it was a wet and rainy day before and I wasn't happy with the pics. But I had clear blue skies on Sunday.

This is the Chapel. Well actually a replica on the old Chapel.

Then we drove down 251 to the Camden County/Charlton County line where the Satilla River passes under the bridge. We drove down the little dirt road leading us under the bridge. Usually there are always people camping there. Unfortunately, when some people camp here, they forget how to clean up after themselves. This has always confused me a bit. They obviously like being outdoors, enjoy nature, appreciate the boat ramps and the fact that the county allows them to camp here for free; yet they trash the place and won't even clean up after themselves. Oh well, enough said.

But, today we had it all to ourselves. This is a beautiful place. The contrast between the black water. green trees and the blue skies, the river was high and wide. Just a glorious day.

Well once you pass under the bridge and pass the boat ramp, there is a gate with a no parking sign on it. No Parking not No Trespassing. So I drove thru the gate and within fifty feet or so I saw I lovely butterfly. A Spicebush Swallowtail I believe. So I jumped out of the truck, camera in hand and took this picture.

While out of the truck, I noticed it stopped running, I just assumed my hubby turned it off. That is not what happened. My truck, my trusty 1996 white Chevrolet pickup with 330,000 miles on the odometer, died.....I could not get it to start.

My white knight whom usually rescues me, is right beside me, what is a girl to do....all else fails, call Daddy!! My Dad, bless his heart was out fishing at the other end of St. Marys. He dropped everything to come help us.

Dad to the rescue.

Pulling my truck out. Thanks to Dad and my wonderful husband they towed my baby home...and fixed her THAT NIGHT!! Woohoo lucky me, only the fuel pump. They worked until dark to get her up and running. I'm a lucky lady to have wonderful family.

It just goes to show that family, people, places and such are all a part of the beauty that surrounds all of us. Which actually I find a bit depressing. Migration is starting and my to do list is a mile long.

One of the many things I will be doing is setting up my Wildlife Personalities and Scenery Booth at the Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits Festival this weekend. The Festival runs from Friday September 19th thru Sunday the 21st. I can't really tell you much more about the festival other that I am in booth 11. I have never set up here before, but I sure am looking forward to it.

Well, I have decided to share with you some of my favorite pictures of my favorite bird, which is the Osprey. These particular photos were taken on Jekyll Island. I follow this Osprey nest along with others in Camden and McIntosh Counties every year. But this family is by far my favorite. I keep track from the time she starts to build her nest until the young are flying.

The above photos were taken last year. Left to Right. Two baby Ospreys, see the one peeking, Mother Osprey and her two babies, Mom is the one in the middle with the yellow eyes, babies and young adult have orange eyes. The last one looks like he is dreaming of when he will be able to fly....or he could be praying that I would just go away. haha

Above are a couple shots of Mom and Dad in flight and bringing in breakfast. My friend Jimmy was a wonderful person who battled with cancer for several years now. He had many small victories, I believe it finally wore him down and he lost the war. I hadn't spoke to my friend recently and was unaware he had taken a turn for the worse. I heard in passing conversation that he was going through a rough time. I tried to call my friend that afternoon and evening, but to avail.....So I left a few upbeat messages and promised to call back the next day.

The next day, I found out my friend had moved on to a better place. I know this sounds cliche', but DO NOT put off talking to or visiting people who are important to you. No matter how busy, how rushed or stressed...it doesn't take long, it doesn't cost anything you can't afford....stop and call or visit. I'm sure it will make them smile and you will better for it also. Don't wait until it is too late.

Friend are a precious gift given to us, they are part of the Beauty that Surrounds Us and often we don't realize it until they too are gone.

I know my Friend is in a better place. Finally eating and fishing again.

I Love You and Miss You Jimmy. I will keep you, your wife and family in my prayers.

Busy, Busy, Busy...slow down and look around

Wow! The last few weeks have been real busy. I have had little time to do any exploring/birding let alone take many pictures. But I did get out to

Andrew's Causeway which is another of my weekly haunts. I saw many great and snowy egrets, 3 great blue herons, a roseate spoonbill, and a little blue heron. I also saw gray kingbirds, mockingbirds, a young loggerhead shrike and several eastern kingbirds, which are among some of my favorites. I was lucky enough to get several good shots. I wanted to share a few with you. I just think they are so majestic looking. A good looking bird.

I was also able to spare a couple hours and go shooting with my friend Greg from work on Saturday morning. We headed out to Jekyll Island of course. As we were coming over the bridge at the pay station we had a very nice treat a chance to stop and photograph this beautiful young osprey while he was sitting on the bridge fishing. I don't think anyone has told him that there is no fishing allowed from that bridge...haha. Well he certainly didn't seem very camera shy either. This is another of my favorite birds. I watch and keep track of several osprey nests throughout breeding season from Jekyll Island to Kings Bay Navy Base. Also a very majestic bird. The morning was cool and clear but warmed up really quickly. We went to the east side of the island to photograph some of the driftwood and to check out any effects from Hannah. Hannah was very kind to us as compared to Fay. I do love the clear blue skies Coastal Georgia has to offer in the early morning hours. What a great way to start the day.

Also on Sunday I drove up to Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge for a meeting of the Colonial Coast Birding and Nature Festival. I always like to arrive early so I can spend some time at Woody Pond. There were bunches of common Moorhens, egrets and little blue herons. But what caught my eye and was a first for me was sitting in the middle of the road about 50 yards away. I saw a Bobcat and her two kittens at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. What a treat. Unfortunately it was too far away to get a good picture but I was just glad I was able to catch a glimpse of them. Harris Neck is a wonderful place. So many things you can see and lots of nice trails to hike. Don't forget to check out the Birding and Nature Festival in October from the 9Th to the 11Th on Jekyll Island at the Convention Center. Stop by and check out the Rookery. Saturday the 11Th is Nature Day. Fun for the whole family. Check out our website at http://www.coastalgeorgiabirding.org/ for more information.

Til next time, remember to slow down and look around....appreciate the Beauty that Surrounds US.

Labor Day Catfish Festival

I want to start by wishing eveyone a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend. This weekend marks the celebration of the Kingsland Georgia Labor Day Catfish Festival in Camden County. The Festival will run from August 30th to September 3rd.

I want to let ya'll know that I will be setting up my Wildlife Personalities and Scenery booth, selling photos of local nature, scenery and wildlife that I write about on this page. I will also be introducing a new DVD I have put together featuring scenes from our beautiful scenic coastal Georgia.

This Festival offers lots of good food, including Catfish, a parade, lots of Arts and Crafts booths, typical carnival rides for the kids and usually a large variety of entertainment all weekend long.

If you are in the area stop and say Hi and introduce yourself. I love meeting new people and making new friends.

Hope to see ya there!!

Georgia's Jewel After the Storm

Today was a good day. The rain finally stopped and the water and tides are receding. I stopped at the Welcome Center on Jekyll Island this morning to meet with Lydia and get some books and cards concerning the Birding and Nature Festival being held on Oct. 9th-13th. Today was also the start of on-line registration. It can be a bit of a nut house at first but it all worked out and it appears that the festival is going to be a great success! We had something like 219 hits on the web page in about two hours. Many trips are already booked to capacity!! This is great, this is my first year helping with the Festival and I'm learning alot, it's great to see it all come together. and Thanks to the lovely ladies at the Welcome Center for all their help this morning. But, anyway when we finished with all that my friend Lydia Thompson and I took a ride around the island looking for birds and checking out storm damage.
One of our first stops was along the banks opposite St. Simons Island. We lost alot of beach. Check out some of these pictures: The first one shows how high the water rose take note of all the debris in the path. The second shows a pipe access, which I am pretty sure was on solid ground before Tropical Storm Fay. The third picture shows how deep and far back the banks were cut by all the wave action.

We also had time to do some birding and ran into a friend of Lydia's named Ruth. She was down from Atlanta and was birding on Jekyll also. She took us down to St. Andrew's Picnic Area where we saw quite a few warblers such as the Yellow-throated Warbler, Black and white warblers, American Redstarts and a Yellow Warbler. While riding the Island we also saw lots Egrets, Herons, Ibis, Gulls and Terns. Here is a picture of a Little Blue Heron and a Great Blue Heron.

I haven't heard on any reports of how the Loggerhead Sea Turtle nests faired during the storm. This was a record year for nesting turtles on Jekyll Island. I would hate to think they were all lost. Mother Nature can be viscious sometimes. That's why we have to pick up the slack and help preserve and conserve our beautiful coastal area and all its resources. All in all I had a very enjoyable day! Thank you Lydia :)
Until next time be safe, slow down and take notice to all the wonderful things around you.

Quiet Little Pond in Brunswick

There is a quiet little pond in Brunswick behind the public ball fields which seems to be home to a variety of birds. I have made this small pond a regular stop on my weekend morning outings. Almost every weekend with out fail in the early morning I can find a Great Egret, a Woodstork, a Great Blue Heron, Yellow-Crowned and Black Crowned Night Herons, usually three Green Herons and a very shy Kingfisher. I do see a variety of other birds there also, I have seen Clapper Rails, Black Skimmers, Blue Jays, Doves and Woodpeckers to name a few.

This weekend I had a special treat....I found a juvenile Yellow-Crowned Night Heron and I got about three feet away from him, resulting in some pretty good pictures I would like to share with you.

The two Photos on the top are Juveniles and the Photo on the bottom is an adult, most likely one of the parents. I'm Debbie, and I'm new to this. Just wanted to give some background about me. I live in Coastal Georgia and spend much of my time on Jekyll Island and the surrounding areas. Local parks, wildlife management areas, Kings Bay Navy Base, wildlife refuges and pretty much any dirt road my old Chevy Pick Up Truck can make it down. It doesn't always make it back out without assistance. Thank you to all those that have helped me in my time of need.
Anyway I hope to share with you some of the sights I see while out on my morning rides and walks. I want to share some of the places I go to, in hopes that you will go there too and appreciate all this area has to offer.

This area becomes addictive, there was a time when I didn't take the time to notice the Beauty that Surrounds Us. I was always in a hurry. Never slowing down and looking across the Marsh or even glancing at the top of the telephone poles as I went by. You might be surprised by what you can see on top of the poles such as Red Tailed Hawks, Ospreys and Bald Eagles just to name a few. Now I only live 10 minutes from the Jekyll Island Causeway, but I have seen days when it can take me and hour just to get to the Causeway and sometimes another hour to get down the four mile stretch of road to the Island.
